it has killed my mother

After the successful screening of ‘It has Killed my Mother’ an anti Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Film in Nairobi earlier this year. It has killed my Mother has been selected to compete in the 7th Edition of the Slum Film Festival (SFF) which kicks off on 2nd to 6th October 2017 in Nairobi.

The films shoot in by refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp in North Eastern Kenya hopes to start a conversation on the effects of FGM and the importance of using creative expression to give people a voice.

During the premiere survivors of FGM, development partners and members of the public also engaged on the ways to mitigate the harmful cultural practice, particularly in refugee camps.

“It has killed my Mother” will compete with 33 other feature films from all over the world on 2nd to 6th October 2017 for the Nairobi-based Slum Film Festival Award.The film has been nominated for the following categories:

  1. Best Film Kenya – (Kenyan Award) Category
  2. Best Script in Feature film – (Kenyan Award) Category
  3. Best Actor – Reyegide Bulambo (Karim) – (Kenyan Award) Category
  4. Best Actress – Lisala Alphonce (Lola) – (Kenyan Award)Category
  5. Best Actress – Jackline Misigaro(Tate) – (Kenyan Award)Category

Abdul Patient, a refugee from Burundi was the cinematographer of the film while Aminah Rwimo, a Congolese refugee who won 2015 best director at the Filmaid Film Festival Award directed the film.

The film was acted, produced and directed by Refugees at Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Founded in 2011 in Nairobi, the Slum Film Festival is a community-based annual film event featuring stories from, by, and about people living in urban slums. It is both a celebration of the creativity of filmmakers living and working in slums, as well as an opportunity to promote – through a week of outdoor screenings – a diverse range of films within communities with limited or no access to cinema.

Here is a brief synopsis of the Film It has killed my mother:

“IT HAS KILLED MY MOTHER” is a story of a girl called LOLA who used to live with her grandmother and went through circumcision at the age of ten. She later falls in love with a man called KARIM but unfortunately, she passed on after giving birth….
